Specialization in the treatment of varicose veins and spider veins
Are you interested in why I focus my vascular surgery on varicose veins and spider veins?
The reason is obvious if you look back a few decades into the history of varicose vein medicine. In the past, it was not known how varicose veins could be successfully and completely cured without leaving serious marks. This problem changed when surgery recognized minimally invasive approaches ("buttonhole or keyhole surgery") as less vulnerable, less prone to complications and associated with shorter rehabilitation times. Vascular surgeons had their first major successes in the 1980s, when ugly varicose veins could only be removed via so-called stab incisions (2-3 mm long stab incisions) in the skin. At the time, I was asked by staff at Innsbruck University Hospital "whether I could treat your legs in such a way that you couldn't see anything at all?" I was surprised at the time because nobody really thought about it. It was the beginning of my revolutionary search for the perfect result.
For decades, surgery and sclerotherapy (adhesion) of varicose veins have been known to be effective methods of treating larger or smaller varicose veins. And even my teachers used sclerotherapy for smaller varicose veins (spider veins). At some point, I had the idea that varicose veins could only be gone if they were removed completely - that's obvious. However, in vascular surgery we have never aimed for flawless results. It then occurred to me that I simply had to follow up the operation with sclerotherapy as often as necessary until I was free of varicose veins. If you understand the development of varicose veins technically, there is also a clear answer as to why early rather than late action relieves the patient of their problem (see dentistry). This brought me full circle. Today I can look back on hundreds of patients, old and young, male and female, who once had varicose veins.
